City Guide

When to Visit Melbourne

Four seasons, sometimes in one day — a month-by-month read on the city, the crowds and the room rates that follow them.

Melbourne's weather joke is true: four seasons daily is a feature, not a bug. Pick your month by what you want the city to do — the calendar is the honest guide.

Rates follow events more than weather. Cup Week and Grand Prix price like holidays; deep winter offers the year's best value for the same suite.

Summer (Dec–Feb): the city outdoors

Australian Open fortnight in January books the city hard — tennis money arrives early and stays late. Rooftop season is at its peak; our skydeck cinema runs and the pool earns its keep.

Expect warm evenings, occasional 38°C days and a city that eats outside until midnight. Book January by October.

Melbourne in autumn

Autumn (Mar–May): the sleeper season

The Grand Prix lands in March and fills everything for a week — plan around it or lean in; the atmosphere is the city's best. After it passes, autumn is Melbourne's secret: crisp mornings, golden plane trees along the river, room rates that exhale.

The comedy festival runs through April. The galleries' best shows open to thinning crowds. Our favourite month.

Melbourne's worst month beats most cities' best. We're not neutral, but we're also not wrong.

Winter (Jun–Aug): the honest one

Cold, sometimes grey, completely underrated. The footy season means the MCG roars on weekends; fireside menus appear; jazz moves into the atrium. Suite rates drop to their year's floor while the service stays at its ceiling.

Winter is when locals visit their own city — the season's best hotels fill with people who know better than to wait for summer.

Key Takeaways
  • January = tennis crowds; book early or avoid.
  • Autumn is the value-and-weather sweet spot.
  • Winter rates are the year's floor — same suites.
  • Cup Week books out by June — the calendar is not a suggestion.

Spring (Sep–Nov): racing fever

September finals run into October race weeks into November's Cup — the city's dressed-up months. Milliners in lobbies, champagne at breakfast, the whole city at a garden party.

Book Cup Week by June. The rest of spring rewards spontaneity — gardens peak, the weather settles and the resort runs its best seasonal programs. The rates page tracks the seasonal windows.
